Tips and Tricks

Some info on how to get the best out of your phone:

1. If you have a GPRS phone, enable full internet access.

2. Sony phones come with an inbuilt Blogger application. Extremely easy to set up and use.

3. Set up the phone's email client.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A phone that can support GPRS can come in handy at unexpected times.Contact your operator and ask for GPRS to be enabled for your connection. Usually the operator will send you the GPRS settings also. In case they dont, or you accidentally erase the settings, you can even go to the sony ericsson website, and get the website to send you the settings. Of course these will only work when you've enable full GPRS in the first place. If you think the GPRS charges are expensive, select a usage only based plan. That way, you can use it only in case of emergencies.

After the internet settings have been correctly  installed, open your browser and see if you can access the internet. Note that the Google page is saved locally in some phones, so you may want actually run a search in google to make sure things are working. The browser in the phone is, sadly, not adequate for some sites. For most browsing I'd recommend Opera Mini Java edition.

Of course you could use the browser to check mail. However, if you are a Gmail user, it might be preferable to use the Gmail application, which can be downloaded and installed as a Java application. The advantage is, of course, that it consumes less data volume than a browser. Unfortunately, as of now, the only way to get the app is to download it on your phone. (Latest version is 2.0.6, 257 KB - as on 28 Feb 2010). The problem with the latest app is that it does not keep you signed in - meaning you have to sige in each time you start the app. Rather painful - which is why I dont recommend upgrading from the older version (1.0.0) that does support this. Unfortunately, the problem with the app is that it cannot add, remove or edit attachments. To overcome this, use the email client on the phone configured with IMAP.

Regarding the gmail (or for that matter any) app directly downloading on PC:
(advantages: you are saved from GPRS charges & you have installer .jar file with you, in case you wish to re-install or give it to a friend)

use this firefox addon & make ur firefox appear as phone for the site.
The user agent string to be put is
SonyEricsson<model no>
(e.g. SonyEricssonK550i or SonyEricssonC510)

Then browse the site using ur firefox. Now the site will think that you are browsing using ur phone & will give you the link to correct setup .jar file specific to ur phone.
Download it to ur PC & put into ur phone over USB/bluetooth. Done.
